New Year Brings New Improvements on Grand Lake St. Marys

February 2, 2011

Thanks to the efforts of the Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration
Commission, and the promised efforts from Governor Kasich to fix
Grand Lake St. Marys, things are looking up for the businesses
and families who live in the towns that surround the lake. The
hope is that activity on the lake will return to normal in 2011, after
dealing with the problems caused in 2010, by the blue green
algae.

Lake sediment dredging will sharply increase, treatment facilities
in three of the lake’s major feeder creeks will be installed and
water treatment with alum will begin as soon as possible. Other
actions will be: to protect prized game fish while removing less
desirable fish like carp which stir up and release phospherous in
lake sediment, and to replace one old dredge and add a third
dredge, with the hopes of potentially creating wetland islands in
the lake with the dredged material. click to read more
In 2010, the Grand Lake St. Marys Restoration Commission was
able to fund and/or begin the following projects to improve the
quality of Grand Lake St. Marys:

  • installation of Airy Gators and Streamside Collections units designed to increase constant aeration to sediment layers and remove sand, and silt particulates from streams prior to entering the lake

  • monitoring of water and data collection by Wright State University with Battelle Institute validating changes in biology and lake chemistry

  • formation of public and private partnerships with state departments with direct concern to activities in the GLSM watershed

  • promotion of agriculture conservation and nutrient management

  • seeking of grants to help fund the improvement projects on the lake
